The Fuel

What Is Propane Autogas?

Propane -- also known as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or autogas -- has powered vehicles worldwide for decades. Stored under pressure, it exists as a colorless, odorless liquid inside the tank.

When pressure is released, liquid propane vaporizes into a gas ready for combustion. An odorant called ethyl mercaptan is added so leaks can be detected quickly and safely.

Propane is produced as a by-product of natural gas processing and crude oil refining -- meaning it is a domestic energy source that does not depend on foreign supply chains.

Designated as an alternative fuel under the Energy Policy Act of 1992, propane has a high octane rating and excellent combustion properties for spark-ignited internal combustion engines.

High Octane Performance

Propane has a 104+ octane rating -- higher than regular gasoline -- giving fleet engines cleaner, more efficient combustion.

Lower Operating Costs

Propane autogas typically costs less per gallon equivalent than gasoline or diesel, reducing day-to-day fuel spend for fleet operators.

Cleaner Emissions

Propane produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline and significantly less particulate matter than diesel -- a real win for air quality.

Established Infrastructure

With fueling infrastructure already in place across Indiana and the nation, propane fleets face far fewer logistical hurdles than many other alternative fuel options.

American-Made Energy

Propane is a by-product of domestic natural gas processing and oil refining -- keeping energy dollars in the U.S. and supporting energy independence.

Fleet Applications

Who Uses Propane Autogas?

From school bus fleets to commercial vehicles, propane autogas is a practical choice for organizations that run high-mileage operations and need reliable, lower-cost fuel today.

School Buses

One of the fastest-growing propane fleet segments. School districts across Indiana use propane buses to cut fuel costs and reduce student exposure to diesel exhaust.

Police & Municipal Fleets

Law enforcement and municipal vehicles log high annual mileage. Propane delivers meaningful cost savings and lower emissions without sacrificing performance or reliability.

Shuttles & Transit

Airport shuttles, hotel transports, and paratransit operators benefit from propane's lower fuel cost per mile and a quieter, cleaner ride experience for passengers.

Forklifts & Warehouse

Propane forklifts are a warehouse staple -- safe for indoor use, quick to refuel, and far more cost-effective over a shift than battery-electric alternatives in many operations.

Farm & Agricultural Equipment

Rural Indiana communities have relied on propane for generations. Agricultural operations use it to power irrigation equipment, grain dryers, and farm vehicles year-round.

Light & Medium-Duty Fleets

New propane vehicle options from original equipment manufacturers have expanded rapidly. Fleets can now buy propane-ready vehicles or convert existing gasoline models.

Industry Resource

Propane Education & Research Council

The Propane Education and Research Council (PERC) is the only energy council of its kind -- a check-off program established, operated, and funded entirely by the propane industry itself.

PERC leads safety and training efforts for propane retailers and consumers, while driving technology development to expand propane adoption as a clean, domestic, and affordable energy source.

PERC programs serve a broad range of industries including fleet vehicle management, landscaping, residential and commercial building, agriculture, and materials handling.
