What Is Natural Gas?
Natural gas is a domestically produced alternative fuel delivered directly to end-users through the existing utility pipeline infrastructure -- no new supply chain required.
It is a mixture of hydrocarbons, predominantly methane (CH4), along with ethane, propane, nitrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and water vapor as delivered through the pipeline system.
Natural gas is non-toxic, non-corrosive, and non-carcinogenic. It presents no threat to soil, surface water, or groundwater -- making it one of the safest alternative fuels available for fleet operations.
Both compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) are designated alternative fuels under the Energy Policy Act of 1992, with horsepower, acceleration, and cruise speeds comparable to conventional vehicles.

CNG vs LNG -- What Is the Difference?
Natural gas is available in two primary forms for transportation. The right choice depends on your fleet size, route length, and fueling infrastructure.
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
CNG is natural gas compressed to less than 1 percent of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure, stored in high-pressure cylinders onboard the vehicle.
CNG is the most common natural gas vehicle fuel in the U.S. and is best suited for light- and medium-duty fleets with centralized fueling -- buses, delivery vehicles, and municipal fleets.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)
LNG is natural gas cooled to -260 degrees Fahrenheit until it becomes a liquid. In liquid form it is 600 times denser than gas, storing far more energy in the same tank space.
LNG is ideal for long-haul, heavy-duty applications where the energy density advantage over CNG makes a meaningful difference in range -- particularly for Class 8 trucks and freight fleets.

Vehicle Options
Three Types of Natural Gas Vehicles
Natural gas vehicles come in three configurations -- each suited to different fleet needs and duty cycles.
Dedicated
Designed to run exclusively on natural gas. Dedicated vehicles offer the best emissions performance and are optimized for maximum fuel efficiency on a single fuel type.
Best for: High-mileage fleets with reliable CNG fueling access
Bi-Fuel
Can run on either natural gas or gasoline, switching between the two as needed. Bi-fuel vehicles give fleets flexibility during the transition to natural gas fueling infrastructure.
Best for: Fleets transitioning to CNG with limited fueling coverage
Dual-Fuel
Uses diesel fuel for ignition assistance alongside natural gas combustion. Dual-fuel systems are generally limited to heavy-duty vehicles and offer a practical path for large fleets.
Best for: Heavy-duty trucks and large commercial fleet applications
