What Is Ethanol?
Ethanol is a renewable fuel made from corn and various other plant materials collectively known as biomass -- including grasses, agricultural residues, and other crops grown right here in Indiana.
Ethanol use is already widespread. More than 95 percent of U.S. gasoline contains ethanol in a low-level blend to oxygenate the fuel, reduce air pollution, and extend domestic fuel supplies.
Ethanol as a vehicle fuel is not a new idea. Henry Ford and other early automakers anticipated it would become the primary transportation fuel before gasoline became so widely available and affordable.
Today, researchers estimate ethanol and other biofuels could replace 30 percent or more of U.S. gasoline demand by 2030 -- a major opportunity for Indiana, one of the nation's leading corn-producing states.

What Is E85?
E85 is a high-level ethanol fuel blend containing 51 to 83 percent ethanol, with the remainder being gasoline. The exact blend varies by geography and season to ensure reliable engine starting in cold weather.
E85 significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to straight gasoline and displaces a much larger share of petroleum per gallon than the standard E10 blend found at most stations.

Flex Fuel Vehicles Explained
Flex fuel vehicles (FFVs) have an internal combustion engine and an ethanol-compatible fuel system that allows them to run on E85, standard gasoline, or any blend in between.
Other than a compatible fuel system and powertrain calibration, FFVs are identical to their conventional counterparts. Power, acceleration, payload, and cruise speed are all comparable on either fuel.

How Ethanol Gets to the Pump
Ethanol production follows a clear path from agricultural fields to your fuel tank -- a supply chain rooted in Indiana farms.
Step 1: Grow & Collect
Biomass feedstocks -- primarily corn in Indiana -- are grown, harvested, and transported to an ethanol production facility for processing.
Step 2: Produce & Transport
Feedstocks are converted into ethanol at a production facility, then transported to a blender or fuel supplier for mixing with gasoline.
Step 3: Blend & Distribute
Ethanol is blended with gasoline by the supplier and distributed to fueling stations across Indiana -- ready to fuel FFVs and standard gasoline vehicles alike.
