Our Mission

Indiana's Voice for Alternative Fuels & Domestic Energy

Drive Clean Indiana (DCI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and Indiana’s only U.S. Department of Energy Clean Cities and Communities coalition — one of more than 75 nationwide. Designated on June 15, 1999, we have spent nearly three decades building partnerships that advance affordable domestic transportation fuels, energy security, and economic development across the Hoosier State.

Our focus is clear: biodiesel, ethanol, propane, and hydrogen. These are Hoosier fuels — grown, produced, and consumed right here in Indiana — creating jobs, strengthening rural economies, and fostering locally driven transportation energy choices. We advocate, educate, and connect organizations with the resources, tax incentives, and policy tools that make the transition to alternative fuels practical and profitable.

Fuels & Vehicles

Drive Clean Indiana supports six alternative fuel pathways — each one a proven strategy for reducing petroleum use, cutting emissions, and strengthening Indiana's energy independence.

  • Biodiesel

A renewable fuel made from vegetable oils and animal fats, biodiesel reduces emissions and works in existing diesel engines with little or no modification.

  • Electricity

Electric vehicles produce zero direct emissions and cost less to operate. DCI supports EV adoption and charging infrastructure development across Indiana.

    Learn More →
  • Ethanol

Domestically produced from corn and other crops, ethanol blends reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support Indiana's agricultural economy.

    Learn More →
  • Hydrogen

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles emit only water vapor. As infrastructure grows, hydrogen represents a promising zero-emission pathway for fleets and transit.

    Learn More →
  • Natural Gas

Compressed and liquefied natural gas offer a cleaner, lower-cost alternative to diesel — especially well-suited for heavy-duty fleets and transit buses.

    Learn More →
  • Propane

Propane autogas is an affordable, clean-burning fuel used in school buses, forklifts, and commercial fleets — with a well-established fueling infrastructure.

Federal Policy

What's Going On in Washington

Federal legislation, IRS tax advantages, and DOE policy decisions have a direct impact on Indiana’s alternative fuel producers, fleet operators, and consumers. DCI tracks it all.

The Alternative Fuel Data Center

The AFDC is the DOE's comprehensive resource for alternative fuel data, incentive programs, and policy updates. DCI uses it as our primary reference — we call it the clean fuel bible.

  • Active Legislation

    Ethanol & Biodiesel Producer Support

Legislation supporting domestic ethanol and biodiesel producers is actively moving through Congress. Indiana's agricultural producers stand to benefit significantly from strengthened federal support for corn-to-ethanol and soybean-to-biodiesel pathways.

  • Active Legislation

    Propane Autogas Fleet Incentives

Federal legislation supporting propane vehicle adoption for commercial and government fleets is advancing — creating new cost advantages for Indiana organizations transitioning to domestically produced autogas.

  • IRS Tax Advantage

    Alternative Fuel Vehicle Tax Credits

New and expanded IRS tax advantages for alternative fuel vehicles and infrastructure are available to qualifying Indiana organizations. DCI can help you identify and access the credits most relevant to your fleet or operations.

  • DOE Guidance Pending

    Updated Federal Fuel Policy Guidance

DCI is awaiting updated language and talking points from the U.S. Department of Energy. This section will be updated with new federal policy details as they are released. Check back or subscribe to our newsletter for the latest.

  • Advocacy Opportunity

New Indiana Developments & Alternative Fuels

Major new projects — including data centers, stadium developments, and autonomous vehicle infrastructure — represent significant opportunities to advance alternative fuel adoption. DCI advocates for Indiana projects to commit to domestic energy solutions from the ground up.
